John (Jack) Adam Bensel, of Baltimore, MD, died on Thursday, May 18, 2017 after a long illness; he was 80. Jack was born on May 28, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland to George Martin Bensel and Eunice Estelle Seufort. He attended school at St. Michael the Archangel and Kenwood High School. He then attended The University of Maryland where he earned a Juris Doctorate at the School of Law in 1960. In 1956 he married Jeannette (Jan) McPherson and together they had 2 children, Eliot and Jackie. Jack briefly worked as a self-employed lawyer in Salisbury...

John (Jack) Adam Bensel, of Baltimore, MD, died on Thursday, May 18, 2017 after a long illness; he was 80. Jack was born on May 28, 1936 in Baltimore, Maryland to George Martin Bensel and Eunice Estelle Seufort. He attended school at St. Michael the Archangel and Kenwood High School. He then attended The University of Maryland where he earned a Juris Doctorate at the School of Law in 1960. In 1956 he married Jeannette (Jan) McPherson and together they had 2 children, Eliot and Jackie. Jack briefly worked as a self-employed lawyer in Salisbury but later followed his heart where he spent the majority of his career at the Maryland School for the Blind. At the School, he dedicated himself to making a difference in the lives of blind and special needs people. After retirement, he began buying and rehabbing townhouses in Highlandtown, Maryland. He also served as a member of the Friends of the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped as well as the Radio Reading Network. An active individual who had many many interests, Jack was an avid boater. Other hobbies included camping, hiking, beekeeping, ham radio (call letters WB3AIO) scouting, and photography.

Jack is survived by his wife Jan of 60 years, his son, Eliot, daughter in law, Tirza, daughter, Jackie, son in law Dave and his three granddaughters, Jeannette, Toni, and Skylar. He was predeceased by his sister Carolyn Bensel (1940-1973).

A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at the Inn at Henderson's Wharf in Fells Point MD on Friday, May 26th from 10AM - 2PM.
